There are times system when power should be removed from the Macintosh Portable, for example when inserting a card. When the battery has a charge, some part of the Macintosh Portable system is always on. The following are occasions to remove power from the Macintosh Portable:
• Adding or removing a card from the Macintosh Portable
• Resetting the modem
• Clearing up problems with parameter RAM
• Storing the unit for more than a week
• Changing the keyboard
• Adding dealer installed options (HD, FDHD)
To preserve the contents of memory while the battery is changed, the 9-volt battery takes over (a switch in the battery compartment tells when the battery cover is in place). When the lid is put back on, the unit switches system power back to the main battery.
To remove power to the Macintosh Portable:
1) Remove the power adapter
2) Remove the internal battery
3) Put the lid back on the battery compartment
4) Power is now removed from the logic board
When system power is removed, the power manager processor loses its memory contents. Because the power manager processor takes over clock chip functions, the time and control panel setting saved in parameter RAM are lost. These values can be reset from the control panel.
